Nigerian Government Introduces New Energy Performance Standards for Room Air Conditioners
Nigeria

Nigeria: The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and energy labeling for air conditioners to improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact. With ACs accounting for over 40% of household electricity use, much of it wasted due to outdated technology, the new standards aim to ensure modern, power-saving models replace inefficient ones. Implemented in phases, energy efficiency will improve by 6% by 2026, 36% by 2029, and 48% by 2031, using the Nigeria Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (NSEER). Additionally, a limit on refrigerant global warming potential will take effect in 2029.

To enforce compliance, manufacturers and importers will be required to label products, and public awareness campaigns will educate consumers on energy-efficient choices. The government is also developing similar standards for refrigeration appliances, the second-largest household energy consumers. "For ECN, we believe that many Nigerians are paying excessive amounts for operating cooling systems. By setting an efficient standard for air conditioning, we are taking steps to make use of this vital equipment more affordable and accessible while caring for the environment," said Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of ECN.
