Nigeria: The Energy Commission of Nigeria recently held a stakeholder session in Lagos to support energy-efficiency cooling in line with the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The meeting centred on enhancing stakeholder understanding of the newly approved Minimum Energy Performance Standards for air conditioners nationwide. The initiative, titled ‘Scaling Up Energy-Efficient and Climate-Friendly Cooling in Nigeria NDC Review’, is being implemented with technical assistance from the United Nations Environment Programme and funding from the Clean Cooling Collaborative.
The project aims to accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient and climate-friendly (low-GWP refrigerant) air conditioners in residential, commercial, and public buildings to help meet Nigeria’s climate targets in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. It was also noted that the Standards Organisation of Nigeria has developed standards aligned with international bodies such as ISO and IEC to improve efficiency by phasing out harmful gases and refrigerants from the environment.
