Nigeria Calls for Greater Adoption of Energy-Efficient Building Standards

Nigeria: The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Nigeria Chapter has called for wider adoption of international standards in heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and building design, stating that energy-efficient buildings can reduce energy consumption in residential and commercial properties by up to 40%. During the investiture of the chapter's new executive committee in Lagos, the organisation highlighted the importance of improved building design, cooling systems and insulation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, lowering energy costs and supporting Nigeria's climate objectives amid rising urbanisation and increasing energy demand.
The chapter outlined priorities including strengthening technical knowledge-sharing, supporting young engineers, expanding collaboration with professional bodies and regulators, promoting research and advancing energy-efficient buildings, indoor air quality, sustainable cooling, affordable housing and smart building solutions. ASHRAE Nigeria also announced plans to strengthen cooperation with organisations including the Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Nigerian Institute of Architects, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the Green Building Council of Nigeria to support professional development and sustainable construction practices.
