USA: New York City is intensifying its push toward building sustainability through a comprehensive program aimed at improving energy efficiency and transparency across large properties. According to information from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice and the NYC Office of Energy and Sustainability, the city has introduced a Sustainable Building Program targeting properties larger than 25,000 square feet. As part of the initiative, these “covered buildings” are assigned performance ratings based on multiple environmental criteria, with results required to be displayed publicly. Key factors influencing the ratings include energy and water consumption, with data automatically sourced from utility providers and integrated into the Energy Star Portfolio Manager platform.
In addition, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions play a critical role in the evaluation process, with calculations conducted by the NYC Department of Buildings. In certain cases, building owners may also engage independent energy firms to carry out assessments, further supporting compliance and performance tracking under the city’s sustainability framework.
The initiative reflects New York City’s broader commitment to reducing emissions and enhancing building efficiency as part of its long-term climate goals.
