New US Tariffs May Increase HVAC Equipment Costs

US: New tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump impose duties of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries, which may increase the cost of imported HVAC equipment and components. The measures were implemented under Section 301 following investigations into forced-labour enforcement practices after the US Supreme Court ruled that a global import surcharge under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act could not be imposed. The new tariffs took effect on 24 July, with a 10% duty applying to economies that have adopted or committed to effective forced-labour import prohibitions, while a 12.5% duty applies to economies that have not.

In a Fox News interview on 28 June, Trump said, "It was 'a shame that I have to go a harder way for the tariffs because the Supreme Court, in a very close decision, ruled against me.'" He added that he has "other ways of doing the same thing," though he noted they were more cumbersome. "But the tariffs have made this country a fortune," he told Fox News. "It made the country rich."
