INDIA: The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted gas supplies to Morbi, forcing a large portion of the region’s ceramic industry to halt production. While several units had already ceased operations due to the shortage, the Morbi Ceramic Manufacturers Association has now decided to extend the shutdown to the remaining operational units as well.
Morbi is one of the world’s top three ceramic clusters, manufacturing a diverse range of products such as floor and wall tiles, vitrified and polished glazed vitrified tiles, twin-charged tiles, sanitary ware, industrial ceramics, and technical ceramic products. The industry is heavily reliant on gas, primarily sourced from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
According to Manoj Aravadiya, president of the association, Morbi has 627 ceramic manufacturing units, of which 430 tile-producing units have already shut down due to the gas shortage. Around 150 sanitary ware units are still operating, as they require comparatively lower gas input.
