China/Europe: Midea Group recorded a rise in air conditioner sales across Europe during the summer as consumers sought cost-effective and practical cooling options amid severe heatwaves. The company’s products, particularly popular in Italy and Germany, contributed to a 35 per cent year-on-year growth in European sales between January and June, according to S&P Global Ratings. Germany became Midea’s second-largest European market after Italy, with sales of 44,000 units in 2024, compared to 160,000 units in Italy. Midea attributed its performance to affordability and innovations such as easy-to-install window ACs and the locally developed PortaSplit model designed for German homes where permanent installations are often costly.
The company has been expanding its research and development capabilities in Europe, with over 10 per cent of its German workforce engaged in R&D. Midea’s overseas revenue accounted for 43 per cent of total income in the first half of 2025, up from 40 per cent in 2021, driven by growth in markets including Italy, Germany and Latin America. Analysts expect overseas expansion to offset slower demand in China, where overall home appliance sales are projected to decline slightly. Despite reduced domestic subsidies next year, Midea is expected to maintain its overseas momentum through competitive pricing and innovative features.
