Paris: The municipalities of Melun and Vaux-le-Pénil in Seine-et-Marne are expanding their geothermal district heating network with the support of Dalkia. A new geothermal well and heat pump system will be added in 2026, supplying nearly 80% renewable energy.
The project includes 17 km of new pipeline, bringing the total network to 43 km, with 115 new substations. This will provide 68 GWh of additional heat, covering the heating and domestic hot water needs of 18,500 homes. The CO₂ savings will increase to 28,000 tonnes annually, up from 16,000 tonnes currently.
Mayor Kadir Mebarek highlighted that geothermal heating costs about 30% less than collective gas heating, benefiting residents amid rising energy prices. Mayor Henry of Meyrignac emphasized the project's importance in the region’s energy transition strategy.
The total investment of €75 million ($ 82.1 million) marks a significant step toward sustainable urban heating and strengthens the cities’ commitment to renewable energy.
