Iran Conflict Pushes Up Construction Costs and Disrupts Housing and Agriculture in Australia

AUSTRALIA: The ongoing Iran war is driving significant economic pressure across Australia, particularly in construction and agriculture. Rising global fuel and material costs are increasing home building expenses, worsening the country’s housing shortage and threatening delivery of new housing targets. Builders and economists warn that affordability challenges may intensify if cost inflation continues.

The conflict is also disrupting fertiliser and wheat supply chains, forcing Australia to import around 250,000 tonnes of urea from Indonesia to offset shortages. In addition, the war has impacted agricultural planning, food security, and grocery price expectations. Despite these pressures, the Australian dollar has strengthened to its highest level in years, supported by improved risk sentiment linked to hopes of a ceasefire between Iran and the US.
