Interest in Heat Pumps Continues to Grow in the UK
UK: Interest in heat pumps continues to grow, with increasing numbers of installations reported under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) and record applications for grants under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).
BUS grant applications rose by 93% last month compared to April 2023. Additionally, over 4,500 MCS-certified heat pump installations were recorded in April, representing a 68% increase from April 2023 and marking the third-best month for heat pumps in the scheme's history.
The BUS grant, recently increased to £7,500 (USD 9560), is available only in England and Wales. Meanwhile, the MCS figures encompass every certified installation across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The increased grant, along with cheaper electricity tariffs for heat pumps, is driving the surge in BUS applications, with heat pump applications nearly doubling year-on-year. Since the scheme's inception in May 2022, more than £148 million (USD 188 million) has been paid out.
In April alone, over 4,500 certified heat pump installations were recorded by MCS, making it the third-best month for heat pumps in the scheme's history.
