Shri Lanka: India on Sunday launched the second stage of Phase IV of its housing project in Sri Lanka’s central hill town of Bandarawela, reinforcing development cooperation between the two nations. The initiative, part of India’s major assistance programme to construct 65,000 houses across Sri Lanka, aims to rehabilitate internally displaced Indian-origin Tamils. Under Phase IV, India has pledged 10,000 houses, with 1,100 already under construction, while Phase III saw the completion of 4,000 homes. High Commissioner Santosh Jha announced that India’s housing aid now covers all 25 districts with a grant commitment exceeding LKR 64 billion (USD 213 million). Additionally, India has announced a special development package worth LKR 2.5 billion (USD 8.3 million) to mark 200 years since the arrival of the Indian-origin Tamil community.
