Import relaxation on air conditioner and compressor

India: The Government of India has extended conditional import relaxations for selected hermetic compressors used in air conditioners, refrigerators, and heat pumps until March 31, 2027, under the amended Quality Control Order framework. The revised notification allows manufacturers to continue importing specified compressor categories for captive use, subject to limits linked to their FY2024-25 import volumes. The move is aimed at avoiding supply disruptions while domestic manufacturing capacity continues to develop.

Under the revised rules, imports of reciprocating hermetic compressors below 2 TR (tonnes of refrigeration) capacity for refrigerators are allowed up to 40% of previous import levels, while rotary hermetic compressors below 2 TR for air conditioners and heat pumps are capped at 30%. Larger scroll and rotary compressors above 2 TR can be imported up to 90% of prior volumes, while imports for variable refrigerant flow systems are permitted up to 100%. Manufacturers availing the exemption will be required to maintain monthly import records and submit indigenisation plans to the government.
