Household Energy Use Declines for Third Consecutive Year in Europe

Europe: Energy consumption in European Union households continued to decline in 2024, marking the third consecutive annual decrease. Total household energy use stood at 9.54 million terajoules, down slightly by 0.2% from 2023 levels. The residential sector accounted for 26% of total final energy consumption across the EU. Natural gas remained the largest energy source for households with a share of 29.4%, followed by electricity at 26.9% and renewables and biofuels at 22.8%.
Space heating continued to dominate energy use in households, accounting for 61.5%, followed by water heating at 15.6%. Lighting and electrical appliances represented 14.8%, while cooking and space cooling accounted for smaller shares. Compared with 2023, energy use declined for space heating and cooking, while consumption increased for space cooling and appliances.
