Heat Pumps Surge Faces Hurdles in Canada with Technician Shortage

Heat Pumps Surge Faces Hurdles with New Refrigerants and Technician Shortage
Heat pumps

Canada: Electric heat pumps are gaining popularity in Canada due to their efficiency, cost savings, and ability to handle extreme temperatures. However, the industry faces challenges as it adapts to new refrigerants, grapples with a shortage of skilled technicians, and navigates inconsistent regulations. While heat pumps reduce energy costs and emissions, they rely on refrigerants like R-410A, a powerful greenhouse gas soon to be phased out. Starting next year, air conditioners in Canada will use R-454B, a less harmful but more expensive and mildly flammable refrigerant. Experts warn of rising costs and the need to train more qualified technicians to meet growing demand, with calls for provinces to align regulations with the United States and update best practices by the end of 2024.
