Canada: Winter is unavoidable in P.E.I., but an increasing number of residents are opting for heat pumps to endure the chilly months. Depending on their household income, Islanders may qualify for a free heat pump and additional energy efficiency upgrades for their homes.

During a Jan. 7 interview with The Guardian, Derek Ellis, director of the sustainability division at the Environment, Energy, and Climate Action Department, discussed the Oil to Heat Affordability Program. In collaboration with Natural Resources Canada, over 12,000 heat pumps have been installed across Prince Edward Island. “It’s a moving target every day. We have approximately 8,500 applicants in our queue at various stages, and I expect that number to grow,” Ellis said.
