Growing Interest in Bidet Alternatives Amid U.S. Toilet Paper Supply Concerns

USA: As the United States faces potential supply chain disruptions due to tariff pressures, concerns have emerged over the availability of toilet paper, prompting consumers to explore alternatives. Unlike previous shortages driven by panic buying during the COVID-19 pandemic, the current concerns stem from anticipated delays and cost increases related to imports. In this context, Japanese washlet toilets and bidet attachments are gaining attention in U.S. households. These water-based hygiene systems use features such as adjustable water jets, temperature control, and air drying, offering a substitute to traditional toilet paper without requiring full toilet replacements. Washlets and bidet seats, many priced from GBP 32 (USD 40 or EUR 38), can be installed on most standard toilets without professional assistance.

Health professionals have pointed to bidets as a more hygienic and skin-friendly option compared to dry wiping. Medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic have noted that water provides a gentler and more thorough cleansing experience, especially for individuals with medical conditions, older adults, or those recovering from surgery. With rising import tariffs potentially leading to toilet paper shortages by mid-2025, U.S. retailers are cautioning consumers to consider long-term solutions. The increasing availability and affordability of bidet systems offer a practical option for households seeking continuity and cost efficiency in their hygiene practices.
