Government of Canada Awards $500,000 to HRAI for Heat Pump Training in Ontario
Updated: Aug 23
Canada: Ontario is addressing the growing demand for heat pump installations by allocating $500,000 to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) to support upskilling in the HVAC sector. This funding will help create a benchmark of skills and knowledge needed to competently install and service electric heat pumps, identify the skills gap in the existing workforce, and work with colleges to develop accelerated training programs. The initiative aims to ensure that HVAC contractors and tradespeople are ready to meet the increasing demand for heat pump installations as Canada moves toward decarbonization. The need for skilled workers is urgent, with demand for refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics expected to rise 385% between 2023 and 2034, according to BuildForce Canada. Meanwhile, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) expressed caution about introducing micro-credentials, stressing that any new skills should augment existing trade standards to maintain quality and safety in installations.
