Global Firms Call for Higher Cooling Energy Performance Standards
Higher Cooling Energy Performance Standards

Global: Ten multinational companies, including ABB, Danfoss, and Johnson Controls, have urged policymakers to adopt higher minimum energy performance standards for air conditioners and other major appliances. The call forms part of five global policy principles launched by the Climate Group Smart Energy Coalition, which represents more than 100 companies focused on improving energy efficiency across buildings and industry. The coalition has highlighted the need for stronger support for high efficiency appliances, improved building energy codes, and better industrial cooling practices to curb rising energy demand and emissions.

Citing data from the International Energy Agency, the coalition stated that average appliance energy consumption must decline by 25% and heating and cooling energy use in new buildings must fall by 50% by 2030 to align with net zero targets by 2050. The group noted that air conditioning remains the fastest growing source of energy demand in the building sector, with consumption projected to rise by nearly 4% annually until 2035 under current policies.
