UK: GEA will install ammonia (R717) heat pumps at Heineken UK’s Manchester brewery as part of a project to replace natural gas-powered boilers with a system designed to support a 90°C hot water network. The initiative, scheduled for completion by the end of 2024, is expected to cut gas consumption by 45% and reduce carbon emissions. The new network will be based on distribution and recovery pipework, enabling heat absorption from multiple processes within the facility.
The Manchester brewery produces around 400 million liters (105.7 million US gallons) of beer annually, including Heineken, Birra Moretti and Foster’s. The installation supports Heineken’s wider target of achieving net zero emissions across its production sites, covering scopes 1 and 2, by 2030.
