Gas Supply Halt Creates Energy Crisis in Transnistria
Moldova: The separatist region of Transnistria in Moldova has suspended heating and hot water for approximately 450,000 residents after Russia halted gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine. The gas transit disruption has heightened energy challenges in the region and intensified tensions between Moldova and Russia. Moldova is reducing energy consumption by one-third while relying on domestic production and Romanian imports. Authorities assured residents that gas reserves are sufficient for winter, and power plants are functioning normally.
Transnistria’s energy company urged residents to adopt measures to reduce heat loss while cautioning against unsafe heating methods. The Transnistrian parliament requested Russia to negotiate a new gas agreement with Ukraine, while Moscow pledged to safeguard its citizens and soldiers in the region. The crisis remains unresolved, leaving residents reliant on electric heaters to manage temperatures as low as 39°F. Moldova and European partners are continuing efforts to stabilise the situation.
