Lennar to Equip Over 1,500 US Homes with Geothermal Systems

USA: Lennar is set to install geothermal heating and cooling systems in more than 1,500 new homes across Colorado over the next two years in collaboration with Dandelion Energy. The initiative aims to reduce energy costs for homeowners while supporting cleaner energy solutions. Unlike conventional heating and cooling systems, geothermal technology utilises underground temperature stability to regulate indoor climates efficiently. Dandelion’s vertical ground closed-loop system circulates water and propylene glycol mixture through underground pipes, transferring heat to or from a home via a heat pump. The company claims its systems, designed to last over 50 years with minimal maintenance, could collectively save homeowners approximately USD 30 million over 20 years compared to air-source heat pumps.

This rollout aligns with Colorado’s broader clean energy strategy, with state incentives and rebate programmes from Xcel Energy helping to offset initial installation costs. Governor Jared Polis and energy officials have endorsed the initiative, emphasising its role in reducing emissions and peak electricity demand. A US Department of Energy analysis suggests widespread geothermal adoption could significantly reduce the need for new transmission lines, supporting the state’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The integration of geothermal systems into residential developments marks a step towards more sustainable housing and energy efficiency in Colorado.
