Gas Prices and Imports Strain Indonesia's Ceramics Industry
Indonesia: High gas prices and the influx of low-priced imported goods have led to a decline in Indonesia's ceramic tile industry, according to the Industry Ministry. Ashady Hanafie, a functional official at the ministry's Directorate of Cement, Ceramics, and Non-Metallic Minerals Processing, highlighted that ceramics is a priority sector due to its competitiveness. He added that Ceramic tiles have faced serious problems and increase in gas prices is worsening the situation. Gas price hikes have made it difficult for domestic ceramics to compete with imports, causing productivity to fall from 90 percent to 61 percent by February 2024. The ministry supports the Indonesian Anti-dumping Committee's recommendation to apply Anti-dumping Import Duties on Chinese ceramic tile products, with tariffs ranging from 100.12 percent to 199.88 percent.
