Revised EU F-Gas Regulation comes into force

Europe: The updated F-Gas Regulation from the EU is now in force as of March 11 following formal approval by European authorities.

The European Council and European Parliament formally adopted recommendations to revise the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) the same week that the revisions were introduced. With these modifications, the EU will be obligated to transition to fossil fuel-free heating and cooling by 2040.

The European Commission verified in a statement that as of this week, the amended F-Gas Regulation's provisions were in effect. It further stated that the modifications strengthen and broaden the promises made in previous versions of the law to regulate the use of fluorinated gases among member states.

According to the commission, the regulation has already shown to be effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions that arise from refrigerant seeping into the atmosphere. "Nevertheless, we aim to phase out the use of F-gases in the EU in order to meet the 2030 objective and reach climate neutrality by 2050," the statement continued.
