EIB Group Strengthens Germany’s Affordable Housing Sector with USD 348 Million Financing Agreements

Germany: The European Investment Bank (EIB) Group convened government authorities, housing developers, promotional banks, and construction industry representatives in Berlin to address challenges in Germany’s housing sector and accelerate affordable housing construction. During the event, the EIB formalised two financing agreements worth a combined USD 348 million, including up to USD 324 million for Gewobag Wohnungsbau-AG Berlin to co-finance around 1,465 social and affordable rental housing units, and USD 24.3 million for Honext WEPA GmbH to establish Germany’s first commercial-scale recycled fibreboard facility in Saxony, expected to create 69 permanent jobs by 2028. The EIB highlighted that it has provided more than USD 7.8 billion in housing financing across Germany over the past decade, while its EU-wide Housing Action Plan aims to scale housing finance to USD 6.5 billion in 2026 to support the delivery of approximately one million additional affordable and sustainable homes across Europe by 2030. The discussions also focused on Germany’s “Bau Turbo” legislation, energy-efficient renovation, modular construction, and innovative building materials to accelerate housing supply and improve affordability.
