EHPA Calls for Heat Pumps to be Prioritised in Horizon Europe

Europe: The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) is calling for heat pumps to be included as a dedicated European Partnership and priority area in the EU’s €175 billion Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for 2028–2034. The association says long-term, predictable funding would support research into efficiency, new refrigerants, lower costs, grid integration and high-temperature industrial applications, while recognising heat pumps as a strategic technology. Legislative negotiations will run through 2026 and 2027, with the programme targeted to launch in January 2028. EHPA also proposes priorities covering cost competitiveness, environmental contribution, energy system integration and market uptake, alongside stronger links to EU initiatives including the SET plan, buildings and industry working groups, the heat pump accelerator platform, the net-zero industry academy, the European Competitiveness Fund and the Industrial Decarbonisation Bank.
