Egypt/China: Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, rising from the desert about 45km (28 miles) east of Cairo, is rapidly taking shape with China playing a central role in its construction, operation, and future maintenance.
The China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), a major state-owned firm, is not only leading the construction of the city’s central business district (CBD) but will also oversee its operation and maintenance under a bilateral agreement.
Spanning 700 sq km (270 sq miles), the new city is designed to ease Cairo’s congestion and pollution and will eventually accommodate over 6 million residents. The CBD, featuring a presidential palace, parliament, government ministries, and foreign embassies, is estimated to cost USD 3.8 billion (29.8 billion yuan).
