Demand for Portable Air Conditioners Increases in Japan

Japan: Demand for portable air conditioners has increased in Japan following periods of extremely high temperatures, particularly in the Tokai region where temperatures have exceeded 40°C. Retailers reported higher sales of portable units, which are generally priced between JPY 30,000 and JPY 50,000 (USD 200–335). Manufacturers and retailers have also expanded their product ranges as consumers increasingly purchase portable units as additional cooling systems for their homes.
Industry sources indicated that installation waiting times for conventional air conditioners have extended to around one month due to increased demand ahead of stricter energy efficiency standards scheduled for introduction in 2027. Unlike conventional split air conditioners, portable units do not require an outdoor unit and only require a window duct for installation, contributing to increased consumer interest.
