Delhi Master Plan 2047 Targets 40 Lakh New Homes and Expanded Metro Network

New Delhi: The Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) 2047 has been unveiled, with plans to construct around 30–40 lakh homes and expand the metro rail network to 695 km by 2047. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal said Delhi’s population is projected to reach 3.20 crore, increasing pressure on urban infrastructure. The plan also includes six new Regional Rapid Transit System corridors and further development of buses and other public transport. Around 180 sq km of the Yamuna floodplains and Ridge area will be preserved, while Transit Oriented Development is intended to support affordable housing. Farmhouses will not be permitted in low-density areas, while building height restrictions have been removed in most areas, subject to specified exceptions.
The plan also places data centres, co-working spaces and cloud kitchens under a new economies category. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the MPD 2047 would focus on affordable housing and transport infrastructure. Aligned with the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision, the plan aims to support Delhi’s projected population while shifting urban planning from a regulatory approach towards development, investment, innovation and job creation.
