India: Daikin is considering partnerships with emerging domestic manufacturers in India for the production of R32 refrigerant gas, as the air conditioning industry moves towards greater localisation and adoption of energy-efficient technologies. The company currently operates three manufacturing facilities in the country with a combined annual capacity of 3 million room air conditioners and plans to expand this to 5 million units by 2030. Localisation in the industry has increased from around 25 per cent in 2020 to nearly 60–65 per cent, with a target of reaching 75 per cent by 2025 under the guidance of the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Manufacturers Association. However, progress has been impacted by delays in the supply of certain critical components due to raw material constraints.
In collaboration with the Indian government, Daikin and other industry participants are working on a proposed replacement scheme that would offer incentives to consumers for replacing older air conditioning units with newer, energy-efficient models. The proposal, currently under consideration by the Power Ministry, supports India’s e-waste policy, which recommends replacing appliances after 10 years. The scheme is expected to lower energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. Daikin has also expressed interest in increasing exports, noting that India’s trade engagement with 54 African countries offers potential for future growth.
