Cyprus Accelerates Heat Pump Adoption to Cut Household Energy Consumption

CYRUS: Heating and cooling account for around 70% of household energy consumption in Cyprus, according to a European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) report. The study highlights Cyprus’ cooling-dominated climate, with cooling demand significantly exceeding the EU average. Renewable sources currently provide about 43% of heating and cooling energy, yet nearly 150,000 households (39% of homes) still rely on oil or gas boilers. The report estimates that replacing oil boilers with heat pump could reduce energy use by 83% and carbon emissions by 68%. With 57% of buildings constructed before 2000, energy efficiency remains a challenge. To accelerate adoption, subsidy programmes cover up to 60% of heat pump installation costs for eligible households.
