Construction Activity Continues to Rise for Another Month in Ireland

Ireland: Irish construction activity recorded further growth in April, according to the AIB Ireland Construction Total Activity Index. The headline index reached 52.4, remaining above the no-change threshold of 50, though slightly down from 53.9 in March. This signaled a second consecutive month of expansion. The commercial sector saw the highest level of growth, while civil engineering activity rose at its fastest rate since February 2022. Residential construction recorded the slowest rate of increase, though it continued to grow for the eighth month in a row. New business volumes expanded for the third successive month.

Employment in the sector increased at a slightly faster pace than in March, with subcontractor usage also rising. Increased demand for materials contributed to higher supplier prices, keeping input inflation above average. As purchasing activity grew, delivery times lengthened due to vendor staff shortages. Subcontractor rates rose at their fastest pace in a year. Survey data indicated that firms attributed growth to stronger demand, and staffing levels continued to rise in response to new project orders. While many firms expressed optimism about activity levels over the coming year, some cited concerns about potential impacts from United States trade policy.
