CANADA: Over the years, the use of CO₂ as a refrigerant has increased significantly. In Canada, grocery stores have traditionally been the primary market for CO₂ refrigeration. Although precise data is difficult to obtain, adoption among grocery retailers has been relatively high. However, the most notable and rapid developments are now occurring at both ends of the refrigeration spectrum, small commercial units and large industrial systems.
In industrial settings such as food processing, CO₂ systems are increasingly capturing market share previously held by halocarbon refrigerants, particularly in locations where the toxicity risks associated with ammonia are a concern. CO₂ is also gaining ground over ammonia systems due to the perception of lower ongoing safety and operational costs. This trend is especially evident in regions where strict operator requirements significantly increase the operating costs of ammonia-based systems.
