China/Europe: Chinese manufacturers have increased air conditioner shipments to Europe, supported by rising demand during recent heatwaves. Midea Group reported shipments of 200,000 portable air conditioning units in the first half of 2026, compared with total shipments for the whole of 2025. The company also recorded 160,000 new orders for its PortaSplit model from June onwards, with supply constraints reported in parts of Europe. The product, priced at around EUR 1,000 (USD 1,154.1), is designed for self-installation, addressing constraints linked to building regulations, installation costs and limited contractor availability. According to the International Energy Agency, air conditioning penetration in Europe stood at 23% in 2025, indicating scope for growth.
Other manufacturers have also reported increased sales in the region, with Hisense Group recording higher sales volumes in Western Europe. Trade data shows exports of air conditioning products from China to Europe rose, including shipments to France and the Netherlands, each reaching RMB 1,400 million (USD 207.1 million/EUR 190.0 million). In contrast, China’s domestic market recorded lower sales, with total unit sales declining by 6% in the first half of the year, while overall exports fell by 9% to RMB 113,600 million (USD 16,800 million/EUR 15,400 million). The shift reflects a focus on overseas markets, particularly Europe, as manufacturers respond to changes in demand patterns across regions.
