Caverion to Deliver Heat Pump Plant for Finnish District Heating Network

Finland: Caverion is supplying a heat pump plant with a total heating capacity of more than 30 MW for Finnish district heating company Loiste Lämpö in Kajaani, Finland. The project will recover waste heat generated by local data centres and integrate it into the Kajaani district heating network. According to the companies, the recovered waste heat is expected to cover more than 80% of the region’s annual district heating demand. The plant will be implemented in phases, with the first two modules, totalling 12 MW, scheduled to begin operations in May 2026, while the remaining three modules with a combined capacity of 18 MW are expected to be commissioned during 2027.

The heat pump plant will use hydrocarbon-based technology and natural refrigerants including isobutane, propane and ammonia. “Investing in a heat pump plant is a concrete step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Waste heat from the data center, utilized through heat pumps, not only reduces emissions but also diversifies local heat production for the benefit of everyone. We chose a partner to design and implement the plant that, in addition to strong expertise, operates to high safety and quality standards,” said Marko Saviniemi, Head of Loiste’s Heat Business. Kari Reunanen, Head of Industrial Energy and Refrigeration Business at Caverion Finland, stated that the project supports the utilisation of waste heat from data centres for district heating and aligns with the company’s focus on industrial heat pump and energy infrastructure projects.
