Carrier Partners with DOE on Advanced Heat Pump Technologies
Updated: Jun 14
USA: Carrier Global Corporation has announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop advanced heat pump technologies for light commercial buildings.
This initiative is part of the Better Buildings Commercial Heat Pump Accelerator program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs by up to 50% compared to traditional natural gas-burning models.
The collaboration is focused on accelerating the transition of sustainable electrification technologies from the lab to the market, with an emphasis on heat pump packaged rooftop units (RTUs) designed for schools, retail spaces, and office buildings.
As part of this effort, Carrier will work with the DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory to test and validate product claims.
The company is also participating in the DOE's Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge and plans to commercialize advanced technology units by late 2024. The DOE notes that energy expenditure in the U.S. is around USD 800 billion annually, with an estimated 20% to 30% of energy wasted. Initiatives like the Accelerator aim to reduce this waste through improved design, equipment, and operations, contributing to national energy efficiency and decarbonization goals.
