UNITED STATES: Carrier Global Corporation has launched its first field trials of battery-enabled HVAC systems designed to store and shift energy use during periods of high grid demand. The systems, which integrate variable-speed heat pumps with battery storage, are being tested in collaboration with utilities and the Electric Power Research Institute.
The initiative comes as the U.S. grid faces challenges including aging infrastructure, rising temperatures, and increasing energy consumption from data centers and industry. Carrier Energy, the company’s new energy management arm, aims to explore the role of homes as distributed energy resources. With around 30 million Carrier HVAC units already installed across North America, representing an estimated 100 GW of potential flexible demand, the trials could provide utilities with new tools to manage peak load.
