Bipartisan Bill Proposes Indoor Air Quality Review for US Federal Buildings

US: A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced the Federal Facilities Indoor Air Quality Assessment Act, which would require a comprehensive review of indoor air quality (IAQ) and HVAC system performance across federal buildings. The proposed legislation follows hazardous wildfire smoke that affected air quality in the Washington, D.C. region and seeks to assess whether federal facilities meet applicable IAQ and HVAC standards. If enacted, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) would review how agencies monitor, test and document indoor air quality, identify the frequency and causes of deficiencies, evaluate corrective actions, and assess the qualifications of personnel responsible for HVAC installation, maintenance and remediation.
The legislation would require the GAO to submit its findings and recommendations to Congress within 12 months. Federal agencies identified with material indoor air quality deficiencies would then have six months to develop corrective action plans. Rep. Walkinshaw said the recent wildfire smoke highlighted the importance of maintaining healthy indoor environments and cited previously identified ventilation issues in federal buildings as a reason for the legislation.
