BASF Begins Construction of Industrial Heat Pump in Germany
BASF

Germany: BASF, in partnership with GIG Karasek, has started building an industrial heat pump at its Ludwigshafen site to produce CO₂-free steam using renewable electricity. The system, designed for a thermal output of nearly 50 MW, will utilize waste heat from cooling processes in a steam cracker and supply steam mainly for formic acid production. Covering around 2,000 m², the unit will be located next to the existing cracker facilities.

The heat pump is scheduled to begin operations by mid-2027 and is expected to generate up to 60 metric tons of steam per hour, or around 500,000 tons annually. This development could lower greenhouse gas emissions at the site by as much as 98%, equivalent to about 100,000 metric tons of CO₂ each year.
