China: Xiaomi has begun in-house production of home appliances, opening its first dedicated plant in Wuhan with an investment of USD 350 million, covering 500,000 square meters and capable of producing up to 7 million units annually. The company plans to manufacture 20% of its air conditioners and other products internally and introduced a new air-conditioning system priced at about USD 7,000, matching rival Gree Electric Appliances. Xiaomi, which operates about 18,000 stores in mainland China and aims to expand overseas outlets from 300 to 10,000 by around 2030, said home appliances account for about 30% of its sales and gross profits. As of the end of September, 21.6 million users had connected five or more devices to its app ecosystem, while the company targets leadership in China’s home appliance market by 2030 with current market share around 10%.
