Electric storage water heaters continue to hold a significant position across emerging Asian markets, including India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Although electric instantaneous water heaters dominate residential demand in several Southeast Asian markets, particularly the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia, electric storage water heaters continue to maintain an important presence across emerging Asia, especially in markets and applications where higher hot water volumes, multiple-point usage and larger household requirements favour storage systems. Their continued relevance is shaped by a combination of infrastructure realities, housing patterns, affordability considerations and consumer preferences that vary considerably across the region.


Expanding Electrification Supports Adoption

Over the past decade, access to electricity has improved substantially across emerging Asia. India has achieved near-universal household electrification, while countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines have continued to expand grid connectivity to remote and underserved communities.


This trend has direct implications for water heating. As access to reliable electricity increases, households often adopt electrical appliances as part of a broader improvement in living standards. In many markets, electricity infrastructure has expanded more rapidly than alternative energy networks such as piped natural gas, making electric water heating the most practical solution.


The situation is particularly evident in archipelagic countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines. Extending gas infrastructure across thousands of islands is economically challenging, whereas electrical networks and decentralised generation systems have proven easier to deploy. As a result, electric storage water heaters continue to benefit from the steady expansion of electrification and residential development.


Limited Gas Infrastructure Across Key Markets 

The absence of widespread residential gas infrastructure remains one of the strongest structural drivers supporting electric storage water heaters in emerging Asia.

Unlike several European markets, where gas-fired water heating is deeply embedded in residential construction, most emerging Asian countries have relatively limited gas penetration. In India, piped natural gas networks remain concentrated in major urban centres. In Bangladesh and Pakistan, supply constraints and declining domestic gas reserves have slowed further network expansion.


Across Southeast Asia, residential gas infrastructure is even less developed. In the Philippines, piped gas networks are largely absent outside a few industrial and commercial areas. Indonesia has expanded city gas programmes in selected urban locations, but coverage remains limited relative to the country's population size. In Vietnam and Thailand, electric water heating solutions dominate the residential sector, particularly in apartments and high-rise developments.


For manufacturers and distributors, this represents an important market characteristic. The lack of gas infrastructure means that electric storage water heaters are not simply competing against gas alternatives; in many markets, they are effectively the default solution.


Storage and Instantaneous Water Heaters: Different Markets, Different Requirements

The water heater market across emerging Asia is far from homogeneous. Consumer preferences vary considerably between countries, reflecting differences in climate, housing stock, bathing habits, infrastructure and household requirements. As a result, electric storage and electric instantaneous water heaters often complement rather than directly compete with one another. 


In tropical Southeast Asian markets such as the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia, electric instantaneous water heaters account for the majority of residential installations. Warm ambient temperatures mean that only a modest rise in water temperature is required for daily use, making instantaneous units a practical and economical solution. Their compact size, lower upfront cost and ease of installation have also made them particularly well suited to apartments, condominiums and smaller urban dwellings, where space constraints and single-point hot water demand are common. 


By contrast, electric storage water heaters retain a stronger position in markets such as India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as in premium residential developments across Southeast Asia. Larger households, greater hot water requirements, multiple-point usage and the absence of extensive residential gas infrastructure continue to support demand for storage systems. Even in countries where instantaneous water heaters dominate the residential market, storage water heaters remain the preferred choice for villas, larger homes, hotels, hospitals and other commercial or institutional buildings where higher hot water volumes and simultaneous usage are required. Rather than being displaced by instantaneous technologies, storage water heaters continue to serve applications where greater capacity and user convenience remain important purchasing considerations. 


Reliability in Intermittent Power Environments

Power reliability remains an important consideration in several emerging markets. Periodic outages and voltage fluctuations continue to affect parts of South Asia, while electricity supply in remote islands and secondary cities in Southeast Asia can also be inconsistent.


Under these conditions, electric storage water heaters offer a practical advantage. By storing heated water within an insulated tank, they provide households with access to hot water even during short-term power disruptions. This feature is particularly valued in markets where power interruptions remain a regular occurrence.


Reliability considerations also extend beyond electricity supply. Water pressure fluctuations are common in many emerging markets, particularly in older residential buildings and peri-urban areas. Storage water heaters generally perform well under varying pressure conditions, making them suitable for a wide range of housing types.


Affordability and Ease of Installation

Affordability remains one of the most important determinants of appliance adoption across emerging Asia. Although heat pump water heaters and advanced tankless systems offer higher efficiency, their initial purchase and installation costs remain beyond the reach of many middle-income households.


Electric storage water heaters, by contrast, offer a lower entry cost and straightforward installation requirements. They do not require gas pipelines, flue systems or specialised infrastructure, reducing both installation costs and complexity.


This advantage is particularly important in countries such as India, Indonesia and the Philippines, where a substantial share of residential construction takes place in secondary cities and smaller towns. In these locations, access to specialised installation and maintenance services can be limited. Electric storage systems are comparatively simple to install and service, contributing to their continued popularity.


Government-led affordable housing programmes also support demand. India's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Indonesia's One Million Houses Programme and various social housing initiatives in the Philippines have stimulated residential construction, creating opportunities for cost-effective water heating solutions that can be easily integrated into new homes.


Urbanisation and Residential Demand

Emerging Asia continues to experience rapid urbanisation and sustained residential construction activity. Large-scale migration towards urban centres has accelerated the development of apartment buildings, condominiums and mixed-use residential projects.

This trend is particularly visible in Vietnam and the Philippines, where high-rise residential construction has expanded considerably over the past decade. In Indonesia, rapid urban growth in cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya has increased demand for compact and easily installed water heating solutions. Thailand's condominium market has also contributed to the continued use of electric storage systems in urban residential developments.


Electric storage water heaters are well suited to these housing formats. They can be installed without major infrastructure modifications and are compatible with the electrical systems commonly used in apartment developments. For property developers, they provide a practical and cost-effective solution that meets consumer expectations without adding significant construction complexity.


Balancing Efficiency and Practicality

The long-term outlook for water heating in emerging Asia will undoubtedly include greater adoption of high-efficiency technologies. Heat pump water heaters, solar thermal systems and advanced tankless products are expected to gain market share as incomes rise and energy-efficiency regulations become more stringent.


However, the transition will not be uniform across the region. Infrastructure limitations, affordability considerations and diverse housing conditions mean that electric storage water heaters continue to occupy an important position in the market.

Manufacturers have also responded to changing requirements by introducing improved insulation materials, digital temperature controls and higher-efficiency heating elements. As a result, the technology itself continues to evolve rather than being displaced outright.


For the global HVAC industry, the key takeaway is that emerging Asian markets cannot be viewed through the same lens as mature economies. In many of these countries, the question is not whether newer technologies exist, but whether they can match the affordability, practicality and infrastructure compatibility that electric storage water heaters currently provide. For millions of households across South and Southeast Asia, electric storage systems remain not a legacy technology, but a solution that is closely aligned with present-day market realities.
