Villeroy & Boch Receives SBTi Validation for Climate Targets

Germany: Villeroy & Boch announced that its long-term climate targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), confirming that the company's decarbonisation strategy is aligned with the Paris Agreement and the objective of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The company aims to reduce direct CO₂ emissions from its operations by 45% and indirect supply chain emissions by 25% by 2030, compared with 2021 levels, while targeting net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2050.

Between 2021 and 2025, the company reduced its total carbon footprint by 27.2%, including a 34.5% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 24.8% reduction in supply chain emissions. Villeroy & Boch attributed the reductions to investments in energy efficiency, renewable electricity, kiln modernisation, photovoltaic systems and AI-supported quality control. The company also plans to invest more than EUR 140 million (USD 164.8 million) in decarbonisation initiatives by 2045, including over EUR 25 million (USD 29.4 million) by 2030 for kiln optimisation and heat recovery, while continuing research into kiln electrification and green hydrogen.

“For us, SBTi validation is far more than just an accolade. It is scientific proof that climate protection and economic responsibility are not mutually exclusive. With the planned investments in decarbonisation, we are laying an important foundation on which we can build in the coming decades,” said Dr Markus Warncke, Chief Finance Officer at Villeroy & Boch.
