USA Housing Starts Rebound in March 2026 as Residential Construction Shows Broad-Based Growth Despite Cost Pressures

USA: Residential construction activity in the United States recorded a strong recovery in March 2026, with total housing starts rising 10.8% month-on-month to 1.50 million units, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Growth was supported by both single-family homes, up 9.7%, and multifamily developments, which increased 13.3%. Compared with March 2025, starts were also higher across most segments, although building permits declined, indicating cautious near-term sentiment.

Builders are responding to inventory shortages and steady demand, despite ongoing challenges such as elevated financing costs, labour constraints and affordability pressures. Regional performance was mixed, with strong gains in the Northeast and South. Overall, the data suggests gradual stabilisation in the U.S. housing market, supported by underlying demand and cautious production increases.
