U.S. Heat Pump Shipments dipped in 2025, Still Outperformed Gas Furnaces

UNITED STATES: US heat pump shipments declined in 2025 but still exceeded gas furnace shipments for the fourth consecutive year, reinforcing their position as the country’s most-shipped heating appliance. Data from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute shows air-source heat pump shipments were 12% higher than fossil gas–fired furnaces, despite year-on-year softness.

Heat pump shipments fell to 3.6 million units, while gas furnace shipments rose to 3.2 million. Industry experts attribute the dip to temporary factors, including higher interest rates, slower construction activity, tariffs, and inventory adjustments linked to the mandated transition from R-410A to lower-impact A2L refrigerants.

Despite higher upfront costs, heat pumps remain central to building decarbonisation, offering two to four times the efficiency of fossil systems. Ongoing state, local, and utility incentives, coupled with policy support and private investment, are expected to sustain long-term growth and accelerate the transition toward electrified heating and cooling.
