US Construction Sector Adds Strong Job Gains at Start of 2026

USA: Construction employment in the United States increased by 33,000 jobs in January 2026, marking one of the strongest monthly gains in more than two years, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase brought total construction employment to over 8.3 million workers nationwide. Much of the growth came from non-residential construction, particularly specialty trade contractors, which accounted for the majority of new positions.

The overall U.S. economy added around 130,000 jobs during the month, with construction contributing roughly a quarter of that total. Despite the positive start to the year, employment trends in the sector remain uneven, and industry analysts note that workforce growth could depend on broader economic conditions and future infrastructure investment decisions.
