INDIA: B Thiagarajan, Managing Director of Blue Star, has said the impact of unseasonal rains across northern India on air conditioner (AC) sales will become clear in the next two weeks. While sales in the National Capital Region (NCR) have been slow due to cooler temperatures, demand remains strong in southern and western states where temperatures are reaching up to 40°C.
Industry estimates indicate that AC sales fell by 20–25% last year after a short summer and an early monsoon. Despite this, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for India’s room AC market remains robust at 9–10%, with projections showing growth from around 14 million units currently to nearly 30 million units by FY30, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation, and increasing climate intensity.
Rising commodity costs, particularly copper, and geopolitical developments in West Asia have led most manufacturers, including Blue Star, to increase prices by 5–15%. Blue Star has raised prices by 8% and plans a further 5% hike soon.
