UK: The UK Government has expanded its Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include air-to-air heat pumps and heat batteries, offering households more options to decarbonise their heating. Previously, the scheme provided grants of GBP 7,500 (approximately USD 9,450) for the installation of air-source or ground-source heat pumps. Under the new rules, households can now claim a grant of GBP 2,500 (approximately USD 3,150) towards an air-to-air heat pump, which can supply warmth in winter and cooling in summer. This marks the first time that air-conditioning units are eligible for government funding, enabling residents to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature during hot summers without relying on fossil fuels.
In addition, the scheme now offers GBP 2,500 (approximately USD 3,150) grants for heat batteries, which store thermal energy overnight for use during the day. These measures form part of the Government’s GBP 13.2 billion (approximately USD 16.63 billion) Warm Homes Plan, designed to lower energy bills for around five million households. A public consultation is also under way to examine the role of alternative low-carbon heating technologies such as storage heaters, infrared panels, and renewable liquid fuels, ensuring that every home has access to a suitable low-carbon option.
