UK: The UK construction sector remained in contraction in September, according to the S&P Global UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which registered 46.2, slightly higher than August’s 45.5. Although the reading indicates a moderation in the pace of decline, it marked the ninth consecutive month below the neutral 50.0 level, signaling ongoing contraction.
All three sub-sectors recorded reduced activity, with civil engineering the weakest at 42.9, followed by commercial construction at 46.4 and residential building at 46.8. Survey respondents attributed the decline to limited new project starts, subdued demand, and elevated business uncertainty. Staffing levels continued to fall for the ninth month in a row, representing the longest period of job reductions in the sector since the pandemic.
