UK: The ceramics industry in the United Kingdom has raised concerns over rising energy costs, policy-related expenses and weakening demand across several end-use sectors, warning that these pressures are affecting manufacturers throughout the supply chain. Represented by Ceramics UK, the sector includes producers of bricks, sanitary ware, refractories, healthcare components, aerospace materials and other industrial products, contributing more than GBP 2 billion (USD 2.7 billion; EUR 2.3 billion) annually to the UK economy. Industry representatives stated that elevated gas and electricity prices, alongside carbon-related costs, continue to impact competitiveness and investment decisions despite some easing from the peak levels seen during the energy crisis.
According to Ceramics UK, many manufacturers are facing challenging market conditions linked to slower activity in construction, hospitality, steel and glass industries. The organisation has called for wider access to government energy support schemes, including the British Industry Supercharger, arguing that only a limited proportion of ceramics manufacturers currently qualify for assistance. While the UK Government recently announced a GBP 120 million (USD 162 million; EUR 138 million) investment package for the ceramics sector, industry representatives maintain that additional measures are needed to support production, safeguard jobs and maintain domestic manufacturing capacity across the sector.
