UK Achieves Record Renewable Energy Installations in 2024
UK: Data from the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) Data Dashboard indicates that over 260,000 certified renewable energy installations, including heat pumps, solar panels, and battery storage, were carried out in the UK during 2024—a 7% increase from the previous record set in 2023. This brings the total number of certified installations to over 2 million, reflecting a significant commitment to renewable technologies for homes and small businesses. Solar PV remained the most widely adopted renewable technology with over 180,000 installations, while heat pumps saw an unprecedented 43% increase, reaching almost 60,000 installations. Battery storage also recorded nearly 20,000 certified installations.
Government programmes, such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in England and Wales and the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan, have been instrumental in driving the adoption of heat pumps by offering financial incentives of up to GBP 7,500 (USD 9,400) and higher for rural households in Scotland. These schemes, alongside MCS-certified standards, continue to foster trust and encourage adoption of renewable solutions, supporting the UK’s transition to net-zero emissions and providing accessible clean energy options for more residents and businesses.
