High Demand for Air Conditioners in Nepal Amid Rising Heatwave
Nepal: Rising temperatures in Nepal have driven a surge in demand for air conditioners (ACs). Previously considered a luxury, ACs are becoming a necessity in many households due to scorching summers, especially in the Tarai districts where temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
This trend is expected to continue, with South Asian meteorologists predicting above-average temperatures for the upcoming months. Factors contributing to the increased demand for ACs include rising incomes and more reliable electricity supplies. AC sales are expected to grow by 25% this year compared to last year. This growth is particularly notable in Pokhara, Biratnagar, Itahari, Dharan, Butwal, Narayanghat, and Nepalgunj.
Modern ACs are more energy-efficient than older models, thanks to inverter technology. These new models consume less electricity, similar to an iron or hair dryer, making them more affordable for middle-class households. Popular ACs range from 1,500 watts to 2,000 watts and typically cost between Rs. 70,000 and Rs. 100,000 (USD 520 - 750).
Another advantage is that ACs can be used year-round for both heating and cooling, eliminating the need for separate fans and coolers. Nepal imports most of its ACs from China, followed by India and Thailand.
These ACs often come with Wi-Fi features, allowing users to control temperature remotely via smartphone apps. Inverter ACs, the most popular choice, are known to use 40% less electricity compared to non-inverter models.
